ALGIERS – Tuesday, 18 October 2022 (APS) – Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mohamed Abdelhafid Henni said Tuesday in Algiers that Algeria had made major achievements in terms of food security, through efforts to develop agricultural production.

Speaking on the occasion of the celebration of World Food Day, Henni said that “Algeria has managed to achieve food security and stability because they represent one of the thrusts of the program of President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune.”

In this regard, the minister said that the UN reports placed Algeria among the developed countries that recorded less than 2.5% of the population suffering from malnutrition.

“Agriculture is essential to achieve food security. Thus, increasing and varying production is one of the main guarantors of any effective development policy,” he said.

After stating that food security is one of the foundations of national sovereignty, Henni highlighted the various programs and development projects launched to meet domestic needs through the diversification of agricultural supply.

These efforts aim at expanding irrigated areas and increasing the production of strategic crops while enhancing the use of land and water resources. Public authorities endeavor to support investment in the southern provinces, preserve forest wealth, and integrate digitalization and innovation into agriculture-related programs.
