ALGIERS – Thursday, 24 February 2022 (APS) – Salah Goudjil was elected by plebiscite on Thursday for a new term as the speaker of the Council of the Nation (upper house of Parliament), in a plenary session chaired by the eldest member of the house, assisted by the two youngest members.

Appointed by President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune as part of the house’s one-third presidential appointees, Goudjil was elected by plebiscite as speaker of the Council of the Nation for a three-year term (2022-2024).

The new members of the upper house were installed at an earlier time.

The move was preceded by elections for the partial renewal of the Council of the Nation and the appointment of the presidential appointees.
