ALGIERS – Tuesday, 09 May 2023 (APS) – The return of Syria to the Arab League is a new victory of Algeria as it is the outcome of the efforts of President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who has never ceased to stress that Syria “is a founding member of the Arab League and cannot be isolated from its Arab environment.”
The return of Syria to the Arab League is the fruit of Algeria’s efforts, mainly during its presidency of the Arab League Summit meeting, and a step forward with its commitment to revive joint Arab action for the unification and the promotion of the values of solidarity and mutual support, in the face of the challenges at both regional and international levels.
In all Arab League meetings, Algeria was the first country to advocate for bringing Damascus back into the Arab fold, which says a lot about its vision of bringing Arabs together and unifying their position over the challenges facing the Arab nation.
This position has been expressed to the media by President Tebboune on several occasions.
“When we hold an Arab Summit, it must be a unifying meeting and a fresh start to reunite the torn Arab world. We are a state that always unites the belligerents.”
“Syria is supposed to take part in the summit,” President Tebboune had said before the Arab Summit meeting of Algiers in reply to a question, by a reporter, on the return of Syria to the Arab League.
Algeria was one of the few Arab countries to have issued reservations about the decision to freeze the membership of Syria within the Arab League late November 2011, following the outbreak of the crisis in this brother country.
