As part of the Summer 2021 training campaign, the sail training ship “El Mellah” 938, from the port of Brindisi (Italy), made a stopover in the port of Split from 19 to 22 July 2021.
The sailing ship “El Mellah” is one of the largest and fastest sailing ships in the world. It is a three-masted sailing ship, with a steel hull, measuring 110 metres in length with the bowsprit and a width of 14.50 m. The maximum height of the main mast is 54 metres of air draught.
The Algerian sailboat was built at the Gdansk shipyard in Poland and arrived at the port of Algiers on December 2, 2017. Algeria is the only country in Africa and the second in the Arab world, after the Sultanate of Oman, to acquire this kind of ship.
During this stopover, the Commander of the sailboat, Lieutenant-Colonel Zoubir Khaouani paid a courtesy visit to the civil and military authorities of the city of Split, accompanied by the Ambassador of Algeria in Croatia, Mokhtar Amine Khelif.
