NEW YORK – Wednesday, 20 September 2023 (APS) – President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune affirmed Tuesday, in New York, that speeding up international negotiations concerning the reform of the Security Council according to a comprehensive and inclusive approach should be a priority for the international community, in order to find a consensus on a true reform that ensures a more transparent representation.

“In the face of the geopolitical conflicts and multiple crises, the weakening of the role of the Security Council in the past few years is evident, this role that was at the heart of the United Nations and whose main purposes were set out by the UN Charter which gives the Council the responsibility of maintaining international peace and security, notably by preventing the use of force and by tackling the causes that threaten peace,” said President Tebboune in his address during the 78th ordinary session of the UN General Assembly.

The President of the Republic said that “any move aimed to strengthen the joint international action must respond to the growing calls for a greater dynamic to a multipolar world.”

This objective, he added, is achieved through “a comprehensive reform of the main organs of the Organization to become more transparent, ensuring the necessary balance between these organs and guaranteeing a fair geographical distribution between the States.”

He stressed “Algeria’s commitment to the joint African position” to “put an end to the historical injustice affecting the African continent.”

That is why, added President Tebboune, reactivating the pivotal role of the UN General Assembly, “as a truly representative organ of the diversity of the international community’s members,” constitutes “a key element to strengthen equality between the States and lay the foundation for a real democracy.”
