ALGIERS – Sunday, 07 May 2023 (APS) – Algeria will never give up the file of memory and will not bargain with any country on this issue, said the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
“We are advancing today a step by step in this file, and they know full well that this is an issue that we will never waive,” said the President of the Republic about the file of memory during his periodic interview with representatives of national media, on the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day, broadcast Saturday on national television and radio.
Regarding the treatment of this issue by Algeria and France, the Head of State said that “there was a clash in the past, but today we have become receptive to the idea of considering the important events that have marked our memory in the colonial era.”
In this regard, he recalled the creation of a joint committee composed of historians from both countries, which began its work recently, expressing the hope to see “an agreement” between the two parties to achieve “tangible results” on this subject.
The President of the Republic stressed the importance of including in school textbooks of both countries the history of popular resistance against the French occupier and the stages that followed.
He also noted the need to encourage the writing of the history of the struggle of the Algerian people, a struggle that lasted more than 132 years.
