ALGIERS – Tuesday, 19 December 2023 (APS) – Minister for Industry and Pharmaceutical Production, Ali Aoun, said on Monday that the national market was covered by 68% of locally manufactured pharmaceutical products, and that this should rise to 70%, noting that the local industrial fabric currently includes 203 pharmaceutical production companies.
These figures were presented by the Minister during a meeting with the Health, Social Affairs, Labour and Vocational Training Committee of the People’s National Assembly (APN) to discuss the prospects of local pharmaceutical production.
With regard to market regulation and the availability of medicines at national level, the Minister said that the national market coverage rate for locally manufactured pharmaceutical products recorded in the first half of 2023 was around 68%, with a rate of almost 70% forecast for the second half of 2023, thanks to the increase in production capacity.
The Minister pointed out that the number of medicines registered in the national nomenclature of pharmaceutical products, within the framework of local production, amounted to 3,327 out of 4,544 registered medicines, i.e. 73%, reporting an increase of 300 medicines since August 2022 within the framework of local production.
There had been an improvement since the end of 2022, when around thirty medicines were out of stock, compared with about ten in November 2023, he said in reference to the fact that most problems with the availability of medicines for diabetics, such as insulin, eye drops and contraceptive pills, had been resolved.
