BAKU – Thursday, 06 July 2023 (APS) – The Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, Ahmed Attaf called on the international community, especially the United Nations (UN) and its Security Council, to assume their moral and historical responsibility for enabling the Palestinian people to enjoy their legitimate right to self-determination.
Speaking at the Ministerial Meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) on Palestine, Attaf said the meeting was “a propitious occasion” to renew the movement’s position of principle in support of the Palestinian people and “to reflect together on ways of strengthening, unifying and coordinating our aimed at ending the occupation of the Palestinian territories and enabling the Palestinian people to enjoy their legitimate right to self-determination and the establishment of their independent state.”
In this connection, the Foreign Minister reiterated Algeria’s firm condemnation of the recent attacks on Jenin in the occupied West Bank, which resulted in the deaths of several innocent people, and its call to hold the perpetrators of these heinous crimes accountable and to make the voice of the international community heard in order to put an end to the policy of occupation, which flagrantly violates all international laws and rules and the most elementary human values.
Attaf further described all settlement activities in Arab lands as “flagrant violations of international law and relevant UN resolutions, including Security Council resolution 2334 (2016)”, warning that the persistence of such violations will undermine all future efforts towards a just settlement.
“Algeria has always supported the Palestinian cause. It hosted, under the personal and direct supervision of the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the Gathering Conference for Palestinian Unity with a view to ending division and achieving reconciliation between Palestinian factions, in a positive step aimed at strengthening Palestinian national unity, crowned by the adoption of the “Algiers Declaration,” recalled the FM.
Attaf also referred to the Arab Summit hosted by Algeria last November, which he said had “once again confirmed the centrality of the Palestinian question and our unwavering support for the rights of the Palestinian people.”
He urged “the coordination of efforts and positions of NAM member states at UN level and in international fora to broaden the basis for international recognition of the State of Palestine so that it becomes a full member of the UN.”
The FM recalled that Algeria welcomed the adoption by the UN General Assembly last December of resolution 247/77, which calls for an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Zionist violations of the human rights of the Palestinian people in the occupied territories, including Al-Quds.”
