ALGIERS – Wednesday, 18 May 2022 (APS) – Algeria said Tuesday it was “following with great concern” the latest developments in Libya, a sister country, following the outbreak of armed clashes in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, calling upon all Libyan parties to prevent escalation.
“Algeria follows with a great concern the last developments in Libya, a sister country, following the outbreak of armed clashes in the capital, Tripoli, and calls upon all Libyan parties to show restraint and avoid escalation, by putting the higher interest of the country above any consideration,” the spokesman of the ministry of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad said in a statement.
“Algeria calls upon all Libyan parties to unify their efforts to create the conditions necessary for the holding of free and fair elections as the best way to restore the Libyan people’s sovereignty to choose their representatives and to meet their legitimate aspirations,” the statement said.
It is also the best way to “overcome the crisis and lay the foundations of a democratic and modern State.”
