ALGIERS – Friday, 15 September 2023 (APS) – The office of the Council of the Nation (upper house of Parliament) said in a statement marking the International Day of Democracy (September 15th) that democracy in Algeria was becoming rooted in an exceptional manner, through the recovery project initiated by the president of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, after his election, and the fulfillment of his election commitments, mainly the constitutional revision of 2020.

The constitutional revision is “the cornerstone for the strengthening of the foundations of democracy in New Algeria and for achieving the aspirations of the Algerian people to a genuine democracy, true to national identity and values, and adapted to the requirements of modernity and good governance,” the office of the Council of the Nation, chaired by Speaker Salah Goudjil, said in the statement.

Those democratic steps have been achieved “within the framework of the social state stressed by the president of the Republic on several occasions, to emphasize the values of the glorious Revolution of November,” the statement said.
