ALGIERS – Friday, 24 June 2022 (APS) – The minister of Tourism and Craft Industry, Yacine Hamadi, held Thursday in Algiers a working session with the secretary general of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Zurab Pololikashvili, with whom he discussed ways and means to enhance bilateral cooperation in tourism industry.

Following the meeting, Hamadi told reporters that “discussions focused on a number of issues, mainly those relating to the support and development of the tourism industry in Algeria through the promotion of tourism cooperation between the two sides.”

The 19th Mediterranean Games (MG ORAN 2022), to officially open on Saturday in Oran (432km west of Algiers), is “an opportunity to promote Algeria as a destination, give a fresh impetus to Algerian tourism and attract more tourists,” Hamadi said.

The minister said that the presence of the secretary general of the UNWTO in the Mediterranean event “is irrefutable evidence of the improvement of the image of Algerian tourism.”

He added that “more than 190 tourist guides have been trained to support the participants (in the Mediterranean Games 2022) and make them discover the city of Oran and the neighbouring towns and cities.”

The city of Oran is hosting the 19th Mediterranean Games from June 25 to July 6.

The secretary general of the UNWTO emphasized “the importance of boosting cooperation between the two sides, mainly through the development of a guidebook for the promotion and strengthening of tourism investment in Algeria, given its tourism assets, its historic sites, its cultural diversity and its natural resources.”

“It’s time to work together to revitalize this important and strategic sector for the achievement of development.”
