ALGIERS – Sunday, 08 October 2023 (APS) – Minister of Communication, Mohamed Laagab, said that the conference he opened in Algiers on Saturday, themed “Assessment of recruitment operations in various sectors,” would be an opportunity for the ministers of the sectors concerned to provide real figures on employment in the country.

In this regard, the Minister said that Algeria, under the leadership of President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, “has made significant efforts” in the field of employment, adding that these efforts “are unfortunately little known”.

He further said that Algeria had achieved these results “in a tense global and regional context, particularly between 2020 and 2023, when the COVID-19 pandemic spread, as well as the crisis in Ukraine and exchange market variations.”

For his part, Minister of the Interior, Local Authorities and National Planning, Brahim Merad, welcomed this “interactive” initiative, which is intended to ” strengthen the citizen’s right to information,” recalling that all national public policies have placed the citizen at the heart of their priorities.

Despite “difficult geostrategic circumstances”, the State has continued to fulfil its social commitments, particularly in areas that should guarantee a decent life for citizens, such as housing, health and the promotion of entrepreneurship in order to provide jobs, added Merad.

Merad took the opportunity to present his sector’s achievements in terms of employment.

Since 2020, almost 300,000 employees have been hired into permanent work positions in the local authority sector, in addition to the jobs created in the new provinces.

For his part, Minister of Labour, Employment and Social Security, Fayçal Bentaleb, focused in his speech on the efforts made by the State to improve the purchasing power of workers, retirees and jobseekers.

There have been four successive increases in salaries during the period 2020-2023, bringing the total number of beneficiaries to 2.8 million, i.e. a salary increase of 47%,” while the increase in retirement benefits and pensions has affected 3.8 million beneficiaries.

Moreover, Minister for Higher Education and Scientific Research, Kamel Baddari, said that his sector had achieved “an unprecedented increase” in terms of employment, particularly for holders of master’s and PhD degrees,” adding that 8,000 people in this category had been hired.

In addition, Minister of National Education, Abdelhakim Belaabed, recalled “the historic and exceptional decisions made by President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, to promote the school system,” noting as examples “the hiring of more than 9,000 English teachers in the primary cycle and 12,877 physical education and sports teachers.”
