ALGIERS – Thursday, 07 December 2023 (APS) – The Nuclear Medicine Center of Bab el Oued University Hospital (CHU) and the specialized hospital in the fight against cancer “Pierre and Marie Curie” received Thursday certificates from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), designating them “Center of Excellence” (ANCHOR) and collaborating pivotal centers with the agency, among the first five centers in the world to have obtained this prestigious recognition.

Chairing the official ceremony of handing over the certificates to these two institutions, at the headquarters of the Atomic Energy Commission (COMENA) in Algiers, in the presence of the Secretary General of the ministry of Health, the Atomic Energy Commissioner and the concerned officials , the Secretary General of the ministry of Energy and Mines, Abdelkrim Aouissi, said that this recognition “is the best proof of the remarkable level achieved by these two centers” in terms of cancer care.

This distinction shows “the total confidence of the IAEA in these two centers after several years of fruitful cooperation, at the national level, through improving the qualifications of human resources in this field, and at the African level, through the multifaceted support presented as part of the regional program of the technical cooperation for Africa on research, development and training in science and nuclear technology (AFRA), under the IAEA”, he said.

The ministry representative explained that the designation of the two hospital institutions as “collaborating pivotal centers of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Center of Excellence ANCHOR,” is part of the agency’s global initiative known as “Rays of Hope” aiming to help countries meet their urgent needs in the fight against cancer.
