ALGIERS – Monday, 21 August 2023 (APS) – The President of the People’s National Assembly (Lower House), Brahim Boughali visited the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the Parliamentary Union of Member States of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (UPCI) in Tehran (Iran) on Sunday, in his capacity as acting president of the union, according to a press release from the lower house of parliament.

Upon his arrival at UPCI headquarters, Boughali was received by the Union’s Secretary General, Mohamed Khouraichi Niass, who briefed him on the activities of the General Secretariat in monitoring current events in the Ummah, mentioning “a series of proposals to be submitted to the Union’s current President in this regard, including the request for observer membership of the United Nations, contacts with the parliaments of countries where burning of the Holy Quran has been deplored, and the ways to find a solution in Niger,” said the statement.

On this occasion, Boughali emphasized “the need to intensify efforts to strengthen the presence of the union, particularly in the face of the challenges facing the Muslim nation”, stressing “the importance of joint Islamic action at the parliamentary level.”

On Sunday, the Lower House speaker began an official visit to the Islamic Republic of Iran, leading a delegation comprising MPs Riad Khellaf and Lies Gamgani, at the invitation of the President of the Iranian Consultative Assembly, according to the institution’s press release.

Boughali was received upon his arrival at Tehran International Airport by the First Deputy Chairman of the Iranian Consultative Assembly, Mojtaba Zonnour.
