ALGIERS – Tuesday, 25 April 2023 (APS) – The Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, Ahmed Attaf was received Tuesday in Nouakchott by the President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, Mohamed Ould Sheikh El-Ghazaouani, as part of the working visit he is making to Nouakchott, as special envoy of the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, said the ministry in a statement.

The FM handed the Mauritanian president “a letter from his brother President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, and conveyed his warm greetings and determination to continue joint action to achieve their common ambition to promote relations of brotherhood and cooperation between the two brotherly countries to the highest possible level,” said the statement.

The meeting was an opportunity to discuss “the progress made in monitoring and implementation of the guidelines of the leaders of both countries and the results of their consultations on the occasion of the state visit of Ould Sheikh El-Ghazaouani in December 2021 in Algeria, which opened a new era in the history of Algeria-Mauritania relations.

The two sides welcomed “the important momentum of bilateral relations and the outcomes of the 19th session of the Joint Committee which opens promising prospects for the establishment of a strategic partnership based on important economic projects, such as the road linking Tindouf to Zouerate, the opening of an Algerian bank in Nouakchott, the creation a permanent exhibition of the Algerian Company of Fairs and Exports (SAFEX), and the use of fishing quotas offered by Mauritania to Algeria.

Moreover, the two officials emphasized “the commitment of the leaders of both countries to the traditions of mutual support, consultation and coordination on issues raised in the various spaces and organizations of common membership, on the basis of their deep conviction that the tensions at regional and international levels and the challenges arising require the adoption of common approaches drawing more than ever in the principle of common destiny.”

At the end of the meeting, Ould Sheikh El-Ghazaouani tasked Minister Attaf with conveying his “warmest greetings to his brother President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and his great satisfaction with the exceptional level of relations of brotherhood and cooperation between Algeria and Mauritania,” praising “his constructive role and his tireless efforts in defending the issues and concerns of the Arab Nation, including during his current presidency of the Council of the Arab League at the summit level.”
