ALGIERS – Tuesday, 06 June 2023 (APS) – The election of Algeria as non-permanent member of the UN Security Council on Tuesday is a “diplomatic success showing that new Algeria is back on the international stage” and reflecting international community’s respect and esteem for the president of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the presidency of the Republic said in a statement.

“In recognition of its pivotal role in the region,” Algeria has been elected with an overwhelming majority of the 193 UN General Assembly member states, in the first round of a secret ballot, as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, for a two-year term starting on 1 January 2024, the statement said.

The election of Algeria to the Security Council’s membership shows “international community’s respect and esteem for the president of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune and reflects its recognition of his contribution to international peace and security.”

“This diplomatic success confirms that new Algeria is back on the international stage and endorses the president of the Republic’s vision and approach for the preservation of peace and security worldwide, based on peaceful coexistence, peaceful settlement of disputes and non-interference in the internal affairs of countries,” the statement said.

Algeria’s foreign policy “draws its principles, values and ideals from our war of liberation.”
