ALGIERS – Tuesday, 29 August 2023 (APS) – The minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, Ahmed Attaf, said Tuesday, in Algiers, that the president of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, had established Central Asia and Asia as one of the main axes of the country’s foreign policy, stressing that Algeria’s non-membership of the BRICS does not change anything in this new approach.

In a press conference in which he presented the initiative of the president of the Republic for the settlement of the crisis in Niger, Attaf said “the president of the Republic is also focusing on Central Asia and Asia as one of the axes of Algeria’s foreign policy promising a prosperous future.”

“The BRICS issue has not changed anything in this approach nor in our ability to defend our interests, as part of the new approach decided by the president of the Republic.”

Attaf added that Algeria sought to adhere to the BRICS to strengthen the frameworks for its foreign policy deployment, stressing that despite its non-membership of the BRICS, Algeria “will resolutely pursue its choices.”

Algeria, which has always advocated multipolarity in international relations and the re-establishment of multilateral cooperation, will continue to defend its choices with its BRICS allies within other frameworks such as the UN Security Council, the Group of 77 and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), the Foreign Minister said.
