ORAN – Monday, 18 December 2023 (APS) – The United Nations Under Secretary General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix underlined Monday, in Oran, that the cooperation between Algeria and the United Nations is extremely intense in all aspects.
“The cooperation between Algeria and the United Nations is extremely intense with the forthcoming presence of Algeria in the Security Council for 2024-2025,” he said, after the audience granted to him by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad Ahmed Attaf.
In this regard, he pointed out that many issues were discusses, including the situation in the Middle East, adding that “as part of my responsibilities, I cited the situations of our different operations in this region and the existing difficulties, challenges and threats.”
“We have also discussed a certain number of issues on the African continent and I thanked the minister for Algeria’s support as part of the commitments of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), the challenges and prospects concerning the security and political situation in the Sahel.”
Lacroix said he discussed with Attaf the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in the Western Sahara (MINURSO) and the different efforts to ensure that this mission and the political process continue.
“The discussions were extremely useful, rich and very important” with Attaf, affirmed the UN diplomat, who thanked Algeria for the organization of this conference, as it has brought together, he said, “the African Union’s peace and security African players, the current members and the next non-permanent members of the UN Security Council.”
