CAIRO (Egypt) – Wednesday, 07 June 2023 (APS) – The Arab Sports Culture Association (ASCA) said Algeria was elected the Arab Capital of Sports Culture 2023, given its leading role in reviving Arab sports games after an absence of 12 years and its hosting, next July, of the 15th Arab Games.

Chaired by the head of the ASCA, journalist Ashraf Mahmoud, the Arab Capital of Sports Culture Award Board said the award was given to Algeria due to its hosting of the African Cup of Nations for Footballers playing in National Leagues, the African U17 Football Championship and the great success of the Mediterranean Games (MG 2022) in Oran.

The success of such events reflects Algeria’s interest in sports and its support of championships, which shows its convictions regarding the values of sports, considered as a unifying factor making nations closer together, in addition to its concern for strengthening Arab identity and preserving its heritage.”

The Arab Capital of Sports Culture Award was launched last year under the aegis of the secretary general of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, at the meeting of the Arab Youth and Sports Ministers Council, and was approved at the meetings of the Union of Arab National Olympic Committees (UANOC) and the Arab Sports Federation.
