ALGIERS – Sunday, 19 March 2023 (APS) – The Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, Ahmed Attaf received Monday in Algiers the Deputy Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Amy Pope, candidate to lead this UN body, said the ministry in a statement.

The talks focused on “the prospects for strengthening the role of the IOM in ensuring a humane and orderly management of migration according to a comprehensive approach based on international legality and cooperation,” according to the statement.

Attaf seized this opportunity to stress the “paramount importance” that Algeria attaches to the migration issue and cooperation with the IOM.

Recalling Algeria’s “colossal efforts” as a country of immigration and emigration, the minister reiterated the vision of Algeria “which favors preventive action and the treatment of the root causes of this scourge and the creation of conditions conducive to the settlement of populations in countries and localities of origin through international cooperation adapted and enhanced,” said the statement.
