ALGIERS – Tuesday, 19 April 2022 (APS) – The public industrial production increased by 4.5% in 2021, a year during which several sectors had experienced “significant improvements” compared to the year before, the National Statistics Office (ONS) told APS Tuesday.

Several sectors contributed to this improvement, namely Energy, Agribusiness, and Steel, Metal, Mechanical, Electrical and Electronic Industries (ISMMEE), as well as mines and quarries, said the source.

The Energy sector soared by 8.2% in 2021 compared to last year when it decreased by 2.8%.

The recovery in production began in the second quarter of 2022 with a rate of 13%.

Hydrocarbons showed a 3.1% growth in 2021 compared to the previous year (8.2%). Production increased by 3.2% in the second quarter and reached 9.7% in the fourth quarter.

The building materials sector, despite positive variations during the first two quarters with respectively +2.5% and +7.8%, dropped by 9.4%.

Chemical industries, leather, footwear and wood, cork, and paper also declined by -8.2%, -7.1% and -2.8% respectively, said the office.

The miscellaneous industries decreased “sharply” by 16.9% in 2021.

During the last quarter of 2021, public industrial production soared by 2.1%. This increase is essentially led by the sectors of the Agrifood (16.8 %), Mines and Quarries (13.3 %), Hydrocarbons (9.7 %) and Energy (5.9%).
