LISBON – Tuesday, 23 May 2023 (APS) – President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, visited on Tuesday the historical headquarters of the Lisbon City Hall where he was given the key of the city.
Upon his arrival at this historic site where the ancient city of Lisbon was founded, and before listening to the national anthems of both countries, President Tebboune was received by the mayor of Lisbon who gave him the key of the city and gave exhaustive explanations on the different historical stages of the region which has become the political capital of Portugal.
The President of the Republic further signed the golden book of the City Hall.
In an address on this occasion, President Tebboune said he was proud to visit Lisbon, which he described as “the capital of history, culture and moderation.”
Lisbon, whose history “dates back to prehistoric times, was the citadel of the Arabs. It is also known for its world-famous navigators, such as Vasco da Gama,” he added.
On this occasion, President Tebboune mentioned the characteristics of the city of Lisbon “combining modernity and ancient history,” saying that “it is a landmark of the Portuguese Republic and has always been a cosmopolitan capital.”
The President of the Republic called for “the intensification of cooperation relations between Lisbon and Algiers through the twinning of the two cities in order to exchange expertise in the field of modernisation.”
