ALGIERS – Thursday, 01 June 2023 (APS) – Participants at the international conference on the Algerian experience in mine clearance said Algeria was in a position to lead joint African and Arab efforts to get rid of the scourge.

The director general of Jordan’s National Mine Action Authority,  Mohamed Brikat, told APS on the sidelines of the conference that the Algerian experience in mine clearing “really deserves to be commended,” adding “I’m convinced that Algeria is in a position to lead joint African and Arab action to rid the country of mines.”

“Algeria is a model, a unique experience of its kind and an example to follow for Arab countries and even foreign nations, and we are grateful for its huge and excellent contributions in the field,” he stressed.

The representative of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, Aymen Sarour, praised the pioneering experience of Algeria which had met all of its commitments under the Mine-Ban Convention known as the Ottawa Treaty.

Algeria can effectively help affected countries, especially the African nations hit by crises.

The member of Yemen’s permanent mission to the United Nations, Yahia Errokhs, commended Algeria’s role in mine clearing, stressing that the Algerian experience in the field was very useful.
