ALGIERS – Sunday, 04 September 2022 (APS) – Algeria on Saturday welcomed the appointment of Professor Abdoulaye Bathily as UN Secretary General’s special representative for Libya and head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (MANUL), expressing its willingness to cooperate closely with him in fulfilling the noble mission assigned to him.

“Algeria welcomes the appointment of Professor Abdoulaye Bathily as UN Secretary General’s special representative for Libya and head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (MANUL),” the ministry of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad said, adding that Professor Bathily, a “distinguished diplomat and a committed pan-Africanist,” has made “significant contributions to peace through meritorious efforts to promote peaceful negotiated solutions to complex conflict situations.”

“The president of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who had the opportunity to speak personally with Professor Bathily about the Libyan crisis and other hotbeds of tension in Africa, welcomes this choice, assuring the new special representative for Libya of his full support.”

The president congratulated the secretary general of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, for this wise choice and the Security Council for the unanimous approval of this appointment.
