NEW YORK – Sunday, 06 August 2023 (APS) – Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN), Ambassador Amar Bendjama, called for self-sufficiency in developing countries to ensure global food security.
The Algerian representative was speaking at a high-level open debate on “Conflict-Induced Food Insecurity in Situations of Armed Conflict,” held on Thursday by the Security Council at the initiative of the United States of America, the Council’s President for the month of August.
The debate, chaired by US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken, comes at a critical time, with the number of people facing famine on the rise. This situation calls for urgent measures to tackle the root causes of food insecurity and malnutrition.
Bendjama stated that Algeria had spared no effort to support its neighbours, particularly those in the Sahel, and provide them with the necessary food and healthcare aid to enable them to cope with the consequences of internal conflicts and natural disasters.
He called for a holistic and integrated approach that mobilizes the efforts of all stakeholders to establish resilient food systems.
In this regard, Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN urged sustainable financing, technology transfer and capacity building for developing countries, particularly in Africa, so that they can implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Prior to the opening of this open debate, the Security Council unanimously adopted a presidential statement on ” Conflict-Induced Food Insecurity in Situations of Armed Conflict.”
